The city of Coimbatore has nine lakes (wetlands). The 9 tanks in and around Coimbatore city was constructed some 800 years back.

In most of the urban ecosystems, these wetlands are the major life-supporting component with high concentrations of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrate species.
The Coimbatore urban wetlands harbor more than 125 species of resident and migratory birds, with August – October being the peak season. Spot-billed Pelican, Painted Stork, Open Billed Stork, Ibis, Spot-billed Duck, Teal, Black Winged Stilt are a few species of the migratory visitors.

As of now, these lakes have almost formed a part of the city drainage system. Encroachment is another serious trouble faced by these lakes, most of the people living nearby, have extended their cultivation lands to these fertile flood plains of these shrinking lakes.

As the areas of the lakes are shrinking every year due to human activities, pelicans are losing their monsoon residency.

Anna Hazare - True Soldier of India

Rare people might know this, about more glorious past of veteran socialist leader Anna Hazare. Ultimately all virtues come from Indian Armed Forces, that gives real vision of India. This true story is as narrated by one senior Indian Army Commander:-

There is a small village named Ralegan Sidhi in Ahmednagar district of Maharastra. A young boy hailing from this village joined Indian Army as a driver in Army Supply Corps. He was on convoy duty during INDO-PAK War In 1965, in Shakargarh Sector. In course of his duties as a driver, while taking Army Supplies/ stores from Pathankot for fighting troops in Shakargarh sector these convoys used to be under heavy air attacks from the Pakistan Aircrafts.

One day Naik (Nk) Anna Hazare was driving his vehicle as part of the convoy across international border when, their vehicular column came under intense attack of fighter aircrafts of PAF. The attack continued for 10 to 15 minutes. All drivers under took all passive measures to ward off the attacks. Once the attack was over, Nk Anna Hazare got up from the road side deep pit a shelter which he had taken to save himself, visited other vehicles and found that all other drivers and co-drivers had been killed due to Pakistan Air Force air strafing and he was the sole survivor. Anna was deeply shaken and questioned him as to why only his life had been spared among all his colleagues, however, he got no answer. As the Indo-Pak war came to an end, Anna Hazare requested for some leave .While moving back the question as to why only he survived never left his psyche. At Pathankot railway station he purchased one book on life of Swami Vivekananda which he read and re -read throughout his journey back home. One particular thought in the book really hit his mind hard that was, Swami Vivekananda propagated that we human being are meant to live for others not for themselves as most of the humans are doing presently which is next to animal behavior.

On reaching his village whose economic status and social status was very low. The whole village had no cultivable land, they had only 20 odd cattle’s for milking, there was no source of drinkable water and the general area around the village was devoid of trees. His village was located in rain shadow area which was draught stricken. The villagers were very poor and their only source of income was sale of locally brewed illicit liquor. There was not even one concrete house in the village and all were living under thatched huts. There was no school in nearby areas up to 20 kms. Drinking water used to come once in a week in water trailers sent by the Collector from Ahmednagar 60 km away. In general, villagers were living under very poor and pathetic conditions. Anna Hazare decided to do something for his village and at that stage he did not know as what he will do; nevertheless he decided to do something. He took premature discharge from the Army and came and settled in his village.

By then he had completed only three years in the army and so would not be eligible for the pension scheme. In order to be self-sufficient, he continued to be in the army for 12 more years. After that, he opted for voluntary retirement and returned to his native place in Ralegan Siddhi, in the Parner tehsil of Ahmednagar district.

Anna only received Rs 25000/- from the Army as lump-sum payment for pension which he pooled in and jumped in to improve the village. There was one temple in the village Anna improved the temple and started living there. He vowed to remain unmarried and dedicate his life for the up liftment of the villagers. He motivated some young persons of the village and first undertook the task of watershed management for the village. Prior to the rainy season they made bunds so that water did not flow away. They planted trees, ensuring cleanliness in the village and organized classes in a make shift classroom at the temple. The village had almost 2500 acres of land out of which only few acres was cultivable. Through sustained efforts of Anna and his team, the water table started rising, land bank of cultivable land increased, children started learning, and people purchased few buffalos and cows.

Today the Anna Hazare, s village displays a different story.All 2000 acres of land is being cultivated, village has 3000 cattle, all houses in the village are pucka and per capita income of villagers has gone up by many folds. There is one school which is of international standard. This school apart from taking students of the area also admits students who have been dropouts or failures. The School is being run like military schools and it produces very good results. All areas around 40 kms of Ralegan Sidhi have green cover, water table has come up and water is being conserved through water shed management techniques. He accomplished all this through “Sharam Daan”, motivating villagers to work on the rolling landscape of the area around his village. He developed a very innovative bunds and small reservoirs along the contours which were designed to hold almost every drop of whatever scanty rainfall the parched land received. Soon the subsoil water reserves reached a level sufficient to cater to the agricultural and drinking needs of the village even if it did not rain for two consecutive years. There is one institute come up in the village being supervised by Shri Anna Hazare which conducts classes for students and farmers from all over the globe. They come to learn techniques of rural development and watershed management. Today Anna has been asked by the Maharashtra Government to bring up 300 villages of the state on model village like Ralegan Sidhi. Shri Anna is on advisory in agriculture and rural development of five states and has got 45 awards to his credit out of which 30 are international awards.

Anna sahib spearheaded “Bharastachar Nirman Andolan”, a movement aimed at cleansing the society of the malaise of corruption in public life. Anna Hazare was the person who initiated the Right to Information act first time in Maharashtra. He had to agitate for a very long time to get this act through in Maharashtra against all the opposition from the politicians and beuaurecrats; thereafter he agitated to get it through at National level. He was the force behind getting Telgi Stamp scam unearthed and later investigated in which number of ministers had to resign and many Babu,s were suspended.

One fine day one contingent of police led by one inspector reported to him at his residence at Ralegan. Anna very politely asked inspector purpose of his visit. The inspector informed Anna that Chief Minister had detailed him with 20 Sepoys saying that Anna was under threat in view of his role in unearthing Telgi Scam. Anna very politely told the inspector that he had died long back while serving in Army during 1965 Indo Pak War and if anyone wants to pump some bullets into a dead body let them. He asked the inspector to go back and inform the CM that he needs no protection.

Camera Traps for Wildlife Conservation

Use of camera traps are as follows:

1. Species present.
2. Species numbers.
3. Appreciation and education of wildlife
4. Breeding status.
5. Condition of animals (e.g. Devil Facial Tumour Disease or DFTD).
6. Gender and gender ratio.
7. Species composition; that is, percentage of different species present.
8. Age classes.
9. Seasonal fluctuations in species and numbers.
10. Time period when a particular species or animal is active and traveling (very useful when targeting introduced animals).
11. Movement linked with weather conditions.
12. Cohabitation of species (e.g. wombats and devils in same den).
13. Increased understanding of what animals are in an area.
14. Addition of new species for GIS data.

ADVANTAGES
1. Minimal disturbance to wildlife.
2. Operate continually and silently.
3. Infrared flash cameras have low disturbance and visibility.
4. Degree of certainty of species in an area.
5. Provides proof of species present-quantitative not qualitative.
6. Can teach what prints and scats go with which species.
7. Can provide evidence for management and policy decisions and policies (e.g. introduced animal control in certain areas-reserves etc).
8. Cost effective monitoring tool.
9. Takes little time and resources input to set and retrieve compared to amount of information received. More invasive and intensive survey and monitoring tools such as live trap and release; hair traps etc. take more time and resources.
10. Monitoring tool that is entirely repeatable and therefore can be used as a baseline tool and then used to quantify changes in species and numbers over time.
11. Easy to use tool that is interesting and fun.
12. Can not be easily seen by other people when using an infrared flash.
13. Can replace the use of more invasive survey and monitoring techniques such as live trap and release.
14. Shows species or individuals that may be untrappable with other methods.
15. Can be left for up to six months as battery power and SD card size allows.
16. Take off the shelf hardware such as normal ‘D’, ‘AA’ size batteries and SD cards.
17. New models are now compatible with most digital cameras which allows field viewing of photos including zooming in on photos and functions such as photo deleting to clear SD cards.

Some issues found while using camera traps are:
1. Moving vegetation in front of the infrared beam will set the camera off. It is important that the beam is placed in an area where there is no vegetation drooping across. Heavy rain can also set off the cameras.
2. I have had the cameras ripped off their anchoring points or moved enough to affect operation by devils and possums on a number of occasions. Make sure that the cameras are securely attached to a stable and secure anchor.
3. Setting the camera low makes them accessible to devils which tend to chew on them.
4. Camera traps are water-resistant and NOT water-proof so taking steps to ensure water does not interfere with electronics is essential.
5. I have found that the Scoutguard cameras have a very bright infrared flash and this can over expose photos if the images are triggered close to the camera.

WHERE AND HOW TO SET CAMERA TRAPS For general monitoring of species in an area some basic rules apply:

Set on a well used animal track, preferably where a number of tracks merge into one.
Set in a reasonably clear area where you can get clear images not interrupted by vegetation.
Set at focus points or access to focus points like watering points or clear areas where animals can rest and sun themselves.
Try to set where animals are moving from one habitat type to another to maximise opportunities of observing different species.
Use roads and walking tracks as animals tend to use these as access.

The park has been set up on about 70 acres of over-used land that was transformed into a forest over the course of 23 years. The Coimbatore Zoological Park and Conservation Centre (CZPCC), a non-profit society floated by PSG Education group managing trustee G Rangaswamy, bought land close to Silent Valley, bordering Kerala. CZPCC began conservation activity only in 1992.

CZPCC did research to transform land that was once used for brick kilns. Being in the foothills of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the attempt was to recreate the same habitat of evergreen, moist deciduous, dry deciduous, rain shadow and thorn forests.

Initially, the project faced some resistance from tribals who said the area was part of their ancestral grazing grounds and fencing it off would curtail their rights. Over the years, though, seedlings of more than 520 species of local plants from the Western Ghats were sown and more 1.25 lakh saplings raised. These have now grown into trees three metres tall. Bio-diversity park to have herb garden

1.5-kmlong forest trail for visitors, on which they can spot small animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and other invertebrates, as well as endemic plants. We have more than 120 species of birds that have made the park their home. There are migratory birds as well.

NBNP has successfully restored and helped growth of many different vegetation types - over 430 species of 25,000 plants of which 85 species are found only in NBR. It is interesting that nearly 30% of these 85 species are endangered in the wild..

There is a Nature Trail (about 1.2 km) at the NBNP on which the visitor can experience the joy and thrill of seeing some of the rare plants, birds, snakes, butterflies and insects. There are 100 species of birds, 20 species of reptiles, 22 species of amphibians, 18 species of mammals, and 300 plus Invertebrates.

Group Captain Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar may be fearless on the cricket pitch but flying on fighter planes scares him. However, the batting legend is set to conquer his fears in his new role as an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer. The group captain rank - equivalent to a colonel in the army - was conferred on him on 3rd September 2010 in recognition of his achievements as an Indian and a cricketer.

Tendulkar is the first sportsperson to be conferred a rank by IAF. In 2008, India's World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev had received the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the Territorial Army.

In June 2010, a formal statement from Rashtrapati Bhawan said "as the supreme commander of the armed forces of India", President Pratibha Patil had decided to include Sachin "under the provision of grant of honorary rank by armed forces to eminent personalities acknowledging their contribution towards the nation."

Accepting the Air Force's honour, Sachin described it as "the greatest honour being bestowed on me...we all want to at some stage touch the sky. "

Tendulkar revealed how scared he was when he first flew on a fighter plane.

"I had the privilege of getting into an Impala fighter plane in 1996 in South Africa. I have never spoken about this before but I was really scared when they were briefing me about ejection procedures. I thought I would eject out of the plane with broken elbows," said Tendulkar, looking dapper in his IAF uniform.

Tendulkar said as a teenager he was fascinated by Tom Cruise in his role as a fighter pilot in the Hollywood blockbuster, Top Gun. But he added that the closest he came to copying Cruise was wearing aviator sunglasses. "I would really want to fly in a Sukhoi-30 and understand how tough it is for our fighter pilots," he said.

The IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Naik said the IAF too was looking forward to putting Tendulkar on his favourite plane. "We will then pin wings on his uniform," said and hoped that the icon's appointment as IAF officer would inspire India's youth to join the service.

Tendulkar said: "I want to urge the youth of India to join the IAF as it is one of the best ways to serve the country. Chase your dreams because dreams do come true."

Save Green and Live Green

1. Freecycle: Everyone has at least a few items that they don't really want but can't bear to throw away. Free cycle it. Free cycling is giving something to someone who will use it -- for free -- instead of throwing it in the garbage. (To find or start a local group, visit freecycle.org). It's simple: post a message on your local freecycle group's Web site, decide who will get your item, then arrange a pick up time. Members give and get everything from moving boxes to cabinetry.

2. Re-Use: A great way to help the environment and reduce your carbon footprint is to reuse items. There are two ways to reuse items. Reusing them for their original purpose, such as Ziploc bags, tinfoil, plastic utensils etc. and finding new uses for things you already own. By doing this you are not consuming any more of the world's precious resources. If you can't reuse something of your own, purchasing something secondhand instead of brand new is another way to reduce your consumption of resources.

3. Microwave your meals: While Microwaves do consume electricity they are between 3.5 and 4.8 times more energy efficient than traditional electric ovens. Cooking and reheating with a microwave is faster and more efficient than a stove top or oven.

4. "Green" your laundry: Get your clothes clean without all of the pollution of detergents, fabric softeners and bleaches by switching to eco-friendlier cleaners. The companies Ecover, Sun & Earth, Seventh Generation and OxyPrime make less-toxic alternatives to traditional laundry detergents. Try nonchlorine bleach such as OxyBoost or Ecover's hydrogen peroxide-based option.

5. Adjust your Thermostat: Adjusting your thermostat is free, easy and can yield big savings. Every degree you raise your thermostat in the summer will reduce air conditioning bills by about 2 percent. Lowering the temperature by one degree in winter will save you 3 percent on heating bills. Regular maintenance and a tune up every two or three years will keep your heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, system operating efficiently, saving energy and money. 6. Switch to cold water: Almost 90 percent of the energy used to wash clothes is used to heat the water. Save money and energy. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water, instead of hot, using a detergent formulated for cold-water use.

Clothes dyers are the third-largest energy users in the home, behind the refrigerator and washing machine. It may take longer but it dries it just the same. . 8. Stop the junk mail: Each year, 100 million trees are cut down and turned into junk mail, with Americans receiving a total of 400 million tons of it every year. Earthworks Group, an environmental consulting firm, said cutting out junk mail is one of the most effective things people can do to reduce pollution. Don't just let it keep coming...get on the phone and make it known that you want off their mailing lists.

9. Switch to CFLs.: Compact fluorescent bulbs use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. They're more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but it only takes about 3 months to make up for the higher sticker price in energy savings.

10. Unplug your Appliances: Many appliances use electricity even when they're turned off. It's called a phantom load, or vampire electricity, and as much as 75 percent of the electricity used by home electronics and small appliances is used while they're turned off. The simple solution is to unplug small appliances and electronics when you aren't using them. Or, plug them into a power strip and turn the power strip off when you aren't using those items.

11. Run your Dishwasher FULL: You'll save up to 20 gallons of water per load, or 7,300 gallons a year. That's as much water as the average person drinks in a lifetime. And don't pre-rinse if your dishwasher can handle it.

12. Don't preheat: Don't bother if you are broiling, roasting or baking a dish that will cook for an hour or more. Don't preheat for more than 10 minutes for breads and cakes. And when roasting meats or baking casseroles, turn off the oven 10 minutes to 15 minutes before cooking time runs out; food will continue to cook without using the extra electricity.

13. Don't let the water run while you brush: Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth. You'll conserve up to five gallons of water per day -- which could add up to 1.5 billion gallons that could be saved across the country each day -- more than enough for all of New York City.

14. Filter Instead of Buying Bottled: Buy a water filter for your kitchen faucet and put to good use yet another way to do away with those plastic water bottles that are clogging landfills and burning up energy in recycling plants. About 1.5 million tons of plastic are used on the bottling of 89 billion liters of drinking water each year.

15. Use low-flow water devices: Wherever you use water, there's a low-flow device to fit it -- from hose nozzles, to showerheads, to faucet aerators. Handy products, such as the WaterMiser Waterbroom, use water and air pressure to remove dirt from outdoor surfaces, reducing water use by up to 60 percent.

16. Watch the Watts: Gadgets such as the Kill-A-Watt and the Watt Minder help you find the biggest energy users in your home. Plug an appliance into one of these devices and it will tell you how much energy it uses per hour, month, or year, and how much it's costing you.

17. Clean air filters: Check air conditioning filters monthly to either clean or replace them. This will help the unit run more efficiently. Better yet: buy a permanent filter that can be washed and re-used. This will save you money over the long run and keep all those disposable filters out of landfills. If your unit is outdoors, check to make sure the coils are not obstructed by debris, plants or shrubs.

18. Use Natural fertilizers: Natural fertilizers actually cost less, and using fewer chemicals can save you money and reduce the level of pollution in local waterways and around your home. To boost the health of your lawn, add clover, as it naturally fertilizes the soil and is drought-tolerant. Let the lawn grow a little longer before cutting it -- longer grass chokes out the sunlight weeds need to grow.

19. Know when to replace your appliances: If your furnace, air conditioner or other major appliances are more than 10 years old, it may make sense to replace them with newer, more efficient models. Buying newer, Energy Star appliances can save you some money per year as well.

20. Make your own cleaners: Household chemicals, including some cleaners, contain volatile organic chemicals, which contribute to indoor air pollution and may cause disease. A cost-effective way to make your home greener is to make your own household cleaners. Many homemade cleaners use non-toxic ingredients and clean just as well as commercial cleaners.If making your own cleaners isn't an option, look for cleaners carrying the Green Seal. Green Seal is a nonprofit organization that certifies products based on their environmental impact, biodegradability and other factors.

21. Fresh Vs Canned Food: Whenever possible, limit purchases of canned fruit and vegetables and substitute fresh. The process involved in canning fruit is at least 10 times more energy intensive than picking fresh fruit. If every U.S. household replaced just one pound of canned or jarred fruit with one pound of fresh fruit during each of the three summer months, the total energy saved could operate the kitchen appliances of over 21,000 households for an entire year.

22. Paper or plastic? Neither: Use reusable cloth or canvas bags. The hard part is remembering to take them with you. But they are sturdier and carry a heck of a lot more stuff. Have a couple of sets and leave one in your vehicle at all times. Paper may be slightly better than plastic because it holds more per bag, but baggers also frequently double bag. Paper bags can be easily reused in many forms and have a better chance of being recycled. If you happen to get a few plastic bags, reuse them as much as possible until they can be used no more.

23. Buy Organic and foods produced locally: Organic products are grown without synthetic pesticides and herbicides and processed without the addition of synthetic chemicals. Some organic options are more expensive. Other products, like cereal and some fruits and vegetables, are very competitive. The secret: Compare prices, buy produce in season and don't buy more than you can use. Locally grown food is often less expensive. In addition, you'll be supporting the local farmers, many of whom are using more earth-friendly farming methods. Buying local foods can reduce the amount of petroleum consumed to transport your dinner by as much as 95 percent.

24. Research fish choices before you buy: If you can read a paper, you already know that the oceans are being overfished. So skip the varieties with dwindling populations or the ones that are targets for poaching or overfishing. Limit your exposure to mercury and other toxins by choosing smaller varieties of fish and avoiding some farm-raised options.

25. Support 'green' businesses: Many manufacturers, stores, restaurants and coffee houses are greening their businesses with strategies like adopting large scale recycling programs; using sustainable forms of energy, such as solar or wind power; reducing waste; and committing to the use of organic, locally grown or eco-friendly products. By spending your money selectively, you reward greener behavior and encourage other companies to become similarly competitive. And, in many cases, there is no extra cost to consumers.

26. Turn off the lights: When leaving the office or classroom, a simple flip of a switch conserves energy. Yet a surprising number of empty offices, conference rooms, restrooms and lobbies are lit for hours each day (and night) while going unused.

27. Use electronic communications: Submit and distribute assignments and reports electronically. E-mailing a document allows for easier, from-anywhere reference for a teacher or colleague -- and provides proof that it was sent on time. Today's technology expands the definition of face-to-face contact, making a quick meeting with a client or colleague across the country, or the world, possible. 33. Use recycled paper: Compared to other paper, it takes a lot less energy and water to make. And thanks to increased demand, manufacturers have been able to match quality and performance. Speaking of paper, it's got two sides, so when possible, use them both.

38. Switch Off Your Computer: The "sleep mode" reduces energy use by 60 percent to 70 percent, the EPA estimates. As for turning computers on and off, despite a popular misconception, this won't harm the equipment. It will, however, save energy as long as the computer will be inactive for 16 minutes or more. If your job doesn't require constant computer use, break the habit of turning it on first thing and keeping it on all day.

39. Turn Off your Computer Monitor: Turn off your computer's monitor when you're not using it. Screen savers only save the screen from having a pattern burned into it. Energy saving options in Windows still use energy - switch it off (the switch is likely accessible and easy to find!)

A dioxin-producing powerhouse, PVC releases toxins into the environment all the way through its life cycle from manufacturing to disposal.

Donate, not discard: Don't throw something away just because you've outgrown that particular style—thrift stores such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army will be more than happy to take items in serviceable condition. You're also likely to find takers by posting on Craig's List or Free cycle. Call it a win-win-win situation for you, the new owner, and the earth.

93. Buy Recycled: The essence of recycling is the cyclical movement of materials through the system, eliminating waste and the need to extract more virgin materials. Harvest rainwater: Adding a rain barrel is an inexpensive and effortless way to capture mineral- and chlorine-free water for watering lawns, yards, and gardens, as well as washing cars or rinsing windows. Almost everything off gasses, which isn't necessarily bad, but synthetic materials or those treated with synthetic substances can off gas chemicals which are toxic. Everyone should be conscious of the kinds of chemicals they bring home, but especially if you have kids, pets, or other family members who are low to the ground and prone to licking things.

99. Find the Time to Volunteer: Your first reaction to the thought of volunteering your time may well be: what time? But you can’t help others until you help yourself. So ask yourself the following: Do you need more time for fitness? Then volunteer to do something active. Don’t over-commit, but ask yourself how volunteering could be the value-added time you will anyways dedicate to goals of your own. Worried this approach seems selfish? Don’t! The most effective volunteers are those who do things that match their pace.

Then consider offering some funds toward good green causes. We joined the Air force because we felt that flying was thrilling, dangerous, and adventurous and because it would set us apart as beings in another dimension. But it was so much more. We went only to about 4000 to 5000 feet, with great difficulty and great deal of time but even then you saw the world with wonder as an unbelievable creation with all its colours, dimensions and vastness. You did feel that you were a very privileged being allowed by God to see His (or Her!) creation. And there was nobody to interrupt or distract you from the immeasurable enjoyment of it. It never became stale or familiar all your life in small planes or fighters.

ChandraYaan – India’s First Mission to Moon

What is ChandraYaan?

Chandrayaan-1 is the first spacecraft mission of ISRO beyond Earth orbit. Chandrayaan-1 is a scientific investigation – by spacecraft – of the Moon. The name Chandrayaan means “Chandra- Moon , Yaan-vehicle”, –in Indian languages (Sanskrit and Hindi) , – the lunar spacecraft. Chandrayaan-1 is India's first mission to the moon launched by India's national space agency the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

History

The idea of undertaking an Indian scientific mission to Moon was initially mooted in a meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 1999 that was followed up by discussions in the Astronautical Society of India in 2000. Based on the recommendations made by the learned members of these forums, a National Lunar Mission Task Force was constituted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The Study Report of the Task Team was discussed in April 2003 by a peer group of about 100 eminent Indian scientists representing various fields of planetary & space sciences, earth sciences, physics, chemistry, astronomy, astrophysics and engineering and communication sciences. Subsequently, Government of India approved ISRO's proposal for the first Indian Moon Mission, called Chandrayaan-1 in November 2003.

The Budget

The estimated cost for the project is Rs. 386 crore (US$ 80 million)

The budgetary estimate for realising the proposed Indian lunar mission Chandrayaan-1 stands at Rs. 386.00 crores (about $76 million). This includes Rs. 53.00 crores (about $11 million) for Payload development, Rs. 83.00 crores (about $17 million) for Spacecraft Bus, Rs. 100.00 crores ($20 million) towards establishment of Deep Space Network, Rs. 100.00 crores ($20 million) for PSLV launch vehicle and Rs. 50.00 crores ($10 million) for scientific data centre, external network support and programme management expenses.

The primary objectives of Chandrayaan-1 are:

To expand scientific knowledge about the moon
To upgrade India's technological capability
To provide challenging opportunities for planetary research to the younger generation of Indian scientists

To prepare a three-dimensional atlas (with a high spatial and altitude resolution of 5-10 m) of both near and far side of the moon.
To conduct chemical and mineralogical mapping of the entire lunar surface for distribution of mineral and chemical elements such as Magnesium, Aluminum, Silicon, Calcium, Iron and Titanium as well as high atomic number elements such as Radon, Uranium & Thorium with high spatial resolution.
By simultaneous photo geological and chemical mapping, we will be able to identify different geological units, which will test the hypothesis for the origin and early evolutionary history of the moon and help in determining the nature of the lunar crust

The Travel

Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh on 22 October 2008 at 06:22 IST (00:52 UTC). The vehicle was successfully inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008.

On 14 November at 20:06 hrs IST, the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) was ejected from the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft and hard landed on the lunar surface near the South Polar Region at 20:31 hrs IST after 25 minutes journey. It placed the Indian tricolour, which was pasted on the sides of MIP on the Moon.

The Weather on the Moon

The moon undergoes extremes in temperature - the side of the Moon receiving sunlight becomes scorching hot at about 130 ºC, and freezing cold at -180 ºC on the nightside.

Scientific instruments onboard Chandrayaan-1?

There are altogether eleven scientific instruments onboard Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft. Five of them are Indian and other six are from ESA (3), NASA (2) and Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1) selected through ISRO Announcement of Opportunity (AO). Two of the ESA instruments have Indian collaboration.

Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation:

Mr Madhavan Nair was born on October 31, 1943 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He graduated in Engineering from Kerala University in 1966 and underwent training at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), Bombay. He joined Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) in 1967. Since then, he has held various positions posting illustrious milestones on his way to the present position.

Nair is as the Chairman of Indian Space Research Organization entrusted with the responsibility of development of space technology and its applications for National development. During his tenure as Chairman, ISRO/Secretary, DOS, twenty two successful missions were accomplished i.e., INSAT-3E, Resourcesat-1, Edusat, Cartosat-1, Hamsat-1, INSAT-4A, PSLV-C5, GSLV-F01, PSLV-C6, Cartosat-2, INSAT-4B, SRE-1, PSLV-C7,PSLV-C8, GSLV-F04, INSAT-4CR,PSLV-C10, Cartosat-2A, IMS-1,PSLV-C9, Chandrayaan-1 and PSLV-C1. He has taken initiatives towards development of futuristic technologies to enhance the space systems capabilities as well as to reduce the cost of access to space.

Project Director

Mylswamy Annadurai (born 2 July, 1958, in Kothawady near Pollachi in Coimbatore district, Tamilnadu, India)[1][2] is a scientist with the Indian Space Research Organization and currently serves as the Project Director of Chandrayaan I. He has a Bachelors in Engineering degree from Government College Of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India and Masters Degree in Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu in India. Over the years Annadurai has worked in different satellite projects - from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites 1A, 1B and communication satellites Insat 2A to 3E series.

He was mission director for the Insat 2C to 3E satellites and was associate project director for the country's first education satellite Edusat before being assigned the prestigious Chandrayaan project in 2004.

The Challenges

Chandrayaan is not just another satellite. There were many new challenges in building it. The challenges started from the launch vehicle itself, as that is what determines the weight of the satellite.

Five years ago (2003) it was decided that Chandrayaan would be carried on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). At that time PSLV was ISRO's tried and tested rocket, while its heavier Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) was still in its infancy. PSLV can carry a payload of around 1,500 kg for geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).

So Chandrayaan team knew the maximum permissible weight of the satellite. The thumb rule is that a rocket can carry around one percent of its total liftoff weight as luggage. That was one boundary within which Chandrayaan team had to work.

Then there was the question matching the payloads the PSLV will carry in addition to the experimental instruments aboard Chandrayaan. They are from multiple sources - the US, different European countries and ISRO. The spacecraft had to be designed for them.

Then, to reach the lunar orbit, the satellite's propulsion system needs high-thrust engines. While the on-board motors of Insat satellites are fired for a maximum of one week to lift it to the intended orbit around the earth, Chandrayaan will have to travel 18 days or more to reach the lunar orbit. So the buzzword for Chandrayaan team was maximum possible miniaturisation of components to reduce weight.

The hyper spectral imager that will photograph the lunar surface has been reduced in size and weight, for instance. The spin-off benefit will be that future satellites can carry smaller equipment,

The next was the communications challenge. The Insat satellites cannot be put in lunar orbit. The communication to and from the satellite will be very difficult. The moon satellite will be orbiting at 3,86,000 km from the earth - over 10 times the distance at which communication satellites orbit.

As a result ISRO's satellite centre had to develop far more advanced communication sensors to receive and transmit signals. Chandrayaan will be orbiting just 100 km above the lunar surface. So the extrme climate near the moon was another challenge that Chandrayaan team had to take into account. Communication satellites while in orbit are manoeuvred to maintain equilibrium between the hot and cold climes up above the earth. In a moon orbit the satellite will be exposed to high heat and thermally it needed a different design.

How will mission controllers communicate with the spacecraft?

If the spacecraft encounters a problem, it can establish contact with controllers on Earth through the Deep Space Network. If a component on the spacecraft fails, controllers on Earth can instruct Chandrayaan-1 to bring a backup online. If the spacecraft points in the wrong direction, its attitude can be corrected. If the spacecraft deviates from the desired trajectory, a controlled burn (thruster firing) can be performed to put it back on track.

The Achievements

Lunar Laser Ranging Instrument (LLRI), one of the 11 scientific instruments (payloads) carried by Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, has successfully been turned ON today (November 16, 2008).

three other payloads of Chandrayaan-1 – Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC), Radiation Dose Monitor (RADOM) and Moon Impact Probe (MIP) – were successfully turned ON. MIP, carrying Indian tricolour, was released from the spacecraft on November 14, 2008 and 25 minutes later, successfully impacted the lunar surface as intended. TMC took pictures of the Earth and moon when the spacecraft was on its way to moon.

The pictures and other scientific data sent by Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft from lunar orbit have been received by antennas of Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu. The spacecraft operations are being carried out from the Satellite Control Centre (SCC) of ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bangalore. Currently, the scientific instruments/payloads are being commissioned sequentially and exploration of Moon with the array of onboard instruments have begun.

The Future

Chandrayaan-1 will be followed by Chandrayaan-2 which features a lander and a rover. India and Russia will jointly participate in this project. However, there may be a provision to accommodate payloads from other space agencies as happened in Chandrayaan-1.

Chandrayaan-2 is the second unmanned lunar exploration mission proposed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at a projected cost of Rs. 425 crore (US$ 90 million). The mission includes a lunar orbiter as well as a Lander/Rover.

ISRO plans to land a motorised rover on the Moon likely in 2012, as a part of its second Chandrayaan mission. The wheeled rover will move on the lunar surface, to pick up soil or rock samples for on site chemical analysis. The data will be sent to Earth through Chandrayaan II, which will be in lunar orbit.

Chandrayaan II will consist of the spacecraft itself and a landing platform with the Moon rover. The platform with the rover will detach from the orbiter after the spacecraft reaches its orbit above the Moon, and land on lunar soil. Then the rover will roll out of the platform. The rover will weigh between 30 kilograms (66 lb) and 100 kilograms (220 lb), depending on whether it is to do a semi-hard landing or soft landing. The rover will have an operating life-span of one month. It will run predominantly on solar power.

The Great Indian Aviator - Subroto Mukerjee

Some men are born to greatness. Others carve their part to it. Subroto Mukerjee was one of the latter category who paved the way to his own tryst with destiny, and laid the foundations of India’s Air Force in the process. The story of his life is one of determination, dedication and total commitment to the cause of the service that he guided from its inception till its transformation into the Air Arm of independent India.

Subroto was one of the six Indians selected for training as pilots at the RAF College, Cranwell. The date of commission of this small pioneering band coincided with the date of formation of the Indian Air Force. Over the next twenty eight years, Subroto was to lead the fledgling service through it’s trials and tribulations, taking it from strength to strength, till it was ready to take it’s place amongst the leading Air Forces of the world.

Family Background

Subroto Mukerjee was the youngest child of a close-knit and well known Bengali family. He was born on 5th March 1911, Calcutta. Subroto’s father, Shri SC Mukherjee had joined the Indian Civil Service in 1892. His outspoken nature and independent ways had a profound influence on Subroto. Subroto used to say that he was what he was, largely due to his father. His mother, Shrimati Charulata Mukherjee was one of the first women students of the Presidency College, Calcutta.

Early Life

When Subroto was three months old his parents took him to England where they stayed for a year and a half. Later, his early childhood days were mostly spent in Krishnanagar and Chinsura where his father was posted on return from England.

Of the four siblings, two sisters and a brother, the eldest sister Renuka, became a well-known parliamentarian. His elder brother Prosanto was a Chairman of the Railway Board. Nita Sen was the youngest sister and Subroto was deeply attached to her. “And as the youngest you know,” his sister said,”he had to do all the odd jobs in the household. We never took him seriously and we never quite got used to his being the Air Marshal. To us he was always the youngest.” And every one loved him. He had the same concern for those he had not seen before. Many people used to come to his father for help and young Subroto saw to it that no servant turned them away. Often he would escort them himself.

From his very early days Subroto had shown an aptitude for a military career – a trait which owed much to the exploits of his uncle, Indra Lal Roy, who had joined the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. Roy was the first Indian to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and was later killed in action when his plane was shot down during a dogfight over enemy lines in 1918. In 1917 a tank came to Chinsura for publicity of the war effort and the six year old Subroto promptly turned up for his first “military” photograph.

Subroto had his early education at the Diocesan School and Loreto Convent Calcutta. In 1921 he went to England again with his parents and joined a school at Hampstead. After a year he came back to India as his father insisted that he should learn about his country first. Subroto then joined the Howrah Zila School and took his Matriculation Examination in 1927. After a year at the Presidency College, he was sent to England – the intention being a spell at Cambridge University as a prelude to a medical career.

Birth of an Air Force

It was at this time that the Government of India decided that a few Indians would be taken, for the first time, into the Air Force, and Subroto’s father sent him a copy of the press notification. Subroto jumped at the idea but his mother was not quite happy about it. Subroto however, was elated and was very confident. He would never have an air crash, he assured her. Years later Subroto was involved in a train accident and his worried mother received a telegram : “Who says flying is dangerous”

In 1929 he wrote the London Matriculation and the Cranwell entrance examination almost simultaneously, and was ecstatic when he heard of his success in the Cranwell examination – a career he had been longing for. At the age of 18 he was one of the first six Indian boys selected to undergo two years of flying training at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell.

Subroto Mukherjee, HC Sirkar, AB Awan, Bhupendra Singh, Amarjeet Singh and JN Tandon were the six young men who embarked for England from India in 1930. Apart from Subroto and Aspy Engineer, who followed them a few months later, none of them had ever been to England before, and the adventure before them was a hundred times more dramatic and momentous than the journey of any RAF cadet from his home in England to the Air Force at Cranwell. These young men were embarking not only on a journey to a distant land, they were in fact laying the foundations of a new Air Force; which as yet existed on paper along, and which many believed would never materialise into reality.

The six Indian cadets were among the pick of Indian sportsmen, and soon made a name for themselves at Cranwell. Sirkar captained the hockey team in which Awan, Amarjit Singh and Mukerjee also played and Amarjit Singh also captained the tennis team. Subroto had finally made his tryst with destiny. As a cadet he told his mother ‘Thank God, I didn’t take up medicine.’ During his traning at Cranwell he often wrote to her.

On 08 October 1932, the six young Indian cadets received their commissions. Subroto Mukerjee, HC Sirkar, AB Awan, Bhupendra Singh and Amerjeet Singh were commissioned as pilots, while the sixth, ‘Tich’ Tandon, was commissioned into the Equipment Branch for no other fault but that his legs were too short to reach the rudder pedals of the aircraft. On that very day, the Indian Air Force Act was passed by the Indian Legislative Assembly, and the Indian Air Force came into being.

At the same time as the pilots were undergoing their training at Cranwell, twenty nine young men were recruited primarily from railway workshops in India and trained for a year as Apprentice Aircraft Hands, later called Hawai Sepoys, Twenty two of them qualified, and one amongst them who rose to be a legend in the IAF in his own right, was AVM Harjinder Singh, MBE. After completing their course of instruction at Cranwell, the Indian pilots passed through the Army Cooperation School at Old Sarum in Wiltshire. They then served a tenure with an RAF squadron before returning home to embark on the most momentous undertaking of their lives, the formation of the Indian Air Force.

Life in RAF

Service conditions in the Air Force in the 1930’s for the Indian officers and men were quite hard. The freedom movement having gained considerable momentum, the young Indian officers and men, fired with the spirit of patriotism, looked forward to making the IAF an independent, efficient and a strong service. But they had to struggle hard for fifteen long years (1932-1947) to achieve the laudable objective they had set before them.

The Indian pilots and technicians were often discriminated against by many of the Royal Air Force personnel under whose direct control they had to function. They soon realised that they had to be twice as good as the RAF pilots, in order to prove their worth, and to be accepted. In fact, certain elements in the RAF had tried their best to throttle the IAF in its very infancy by insinuating that the Indians were incapable of managing affairs on their own. This not only infuriated the Indian personnel, it further steeled their determination and goaded them on to greater efforts and sustained hard work, not only to keep the Air Force going, but to prove that they were no less, rather better than the British in every field. In the bargain they were often subjected to all kinds of humiliation and hardships. At the same time, it is worth recording that there were many amongst the British establishment who had the best interests of the fledgling IAF at heart. They laboured hard along with the Indian personnel to ensure that the IAF established itself as an independent service as soon as possible.

On 01 April 1933, ‘A’ Flight of the No 1 Squadron, Indian Air Force, was formed at Karachi. Subroto was among the five Indian pilots who made up the flight. The flight was equipped with four Westland Wapiti biplanes, said to have been acquired by the Government at £10 each. The Commanding Officer of the flight was Flt Lt CA Bouchier, DFC, of the RAF (later Air Vice Marshal Sir Cecil Bouchier KCBE, CB, DFC). A hard task master, he had an excellent rapport with the Indian pilots and airmen.

A word about the Westland Wapiti or ‘Wop’ as the aircraft was popularly known. The Wapiti was inducted in No. 1 Squadron, IAF at Drigh Road, Karachi on 01 Apr 1933. It was the IAF’s first aircraft on which the pioneers were trained, and on which the IAF was built. It was put to a variety of tasks by the IAF including escort of convoys, anti-submarine patrols, recce, close air support, strafing and bombing. The Wapiti was a two-seat, multi-role biplane with a maximum speed of 225 kmph and a combat range of 580 kms. It was an antiquated aircraft at that time, and from its inception, our fliers had learnt to make up for the inadequacies by initiative, innovation and excellence. These qualities have created a tradition in the IAF and has paid handsome dividends whenever we have been called upon to stretch the performance graphs of men and machines.

In the course of the development of the IAF, Subroto was a man with innumerable ‘Firsts’ to his credit’. He became the first Indian to command a Flight, a Squadron, a Station (Kohat), and finally, the Service itself. On another occasion, he also had the unique distinction of being the first IAF pilot to carry out an airdrop over a beleaguered army picket. In the spring of 1941 the Faqir of Ipi again became active and the IAF renewed their acquaintance with this wild man of the mountains. Operations started quietly towards the end of 1940 when Subroto was in command of Miranshah. Except for a minor battle in the Tappi hill area, the big stuff was reserved for the coming spring.

By the time World War II started in 1939, Mukerjee was the senior-most officer in the IAF and as such the responsibility weighed heavily on him. He was known to be a good, sound and a steady pilot and was known not to take unnecessary risks in flying. He met with no accidents except for a forced landing when caught up in a fierce storm of long duration. For his participation in the North West Frontier operations in 1942, he was Mentioned-in-Despatches. He became the first Indian to take over an RAF Station, when he commanded RAF Station Kohat from August 1943 till December 1944. In June 1945 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (Military Division).

Subroto’s even natured temperament helped defuse tensions and avoid unnecessary confrontation. As the senior-most officer, he was ideally suited to act as a buffer between the Royal Air Force from whose control the IAF was trying to extricate itself, and the young Indian officers and men who often chafed at the manner in which some members of the RAF treated IAF personnel. He would mollify such situations and further strengthen their resolve to work for higher aims and greater achievements. He defused such volatile situations and infused the spirit of integration among all the ranks of the IAF. “Are we pilots risking our neck and self respect for the pay we get – or the airmen sweating it out for the petty pay of Rs 45 per month (that was the pay of Hawai Sepoys in 1930s)? We must work for a cause, otherwise there will never be an Indian Air Force.” His touching and inspiring talks always had the desired effect, goading officers and men to work with devotion. This role paid rich dividends in the long run.

Genuine Conviction

After long years of struggle, Indian Independence became a reality on the 15th of August 1947. However, freedom came at a cost and the partition of India into the dominions of India and Pakistan was part of the price that the people of the long-suffering sub-continent had to pay. Along with the Army and the Navy, the assets of the Indian Air Force were also divided between the two new countries. A heavy burden of responsibility descended upon the shoulders of young officers like Subroto Mukerjee, who suddenly were faced with the enormous task of reconstruction in the face of the sudden vacuum created by the departure of the British.

However, to Subroto’s great credit, in all the decisions to be made, the interests of the country and the service were ever uppermost with him. When the Governor General, Lord Louis Mountbatten asked Mukerjee, the senior-most officer in the IAF, as to how long British officers should remain with the IAF, Mukerjee replied, “For five to seven years”. Though this was a decision which delayed his own promotion by a good seven years – it showed how genuine in conviction and action were the thoughts and deeds of the man.

The first three Air Chiefs of independent India, Air Marshals Sir Thomas Elmhirst KBE, CB, AFC, Sir Ronald Ivelaw Chapman, KBE, CBE, DFC, AFC, and Sir Gerald Ernest Gibbs, KBE, CIE, MC, were from the RAF. The IAF was lucky to have as Chiefs of Air Staff, men of such calibre, integrity and experience.

Sir Thomas Elmhirst guided the IAF through the stormy days of independence, partition and reconstruction. He made it abundantly clear at the very beginning, that as the Air Force of an independent country, the Indian Air Force was to be an independent service and not merely an adjunct of the Indian Army, as it had been during the days of the Raj. It fell to his lot to organise the truncated IAF into a viable fighting force.

In this task he was ably assisted by Subroto who tried to utilise these years by gaining worthwhile experience in the appointment of Deputy Chief. He held this appointment under the two subsequent British Air Chiefs as well. In December 1952 he proceeded to England to undergo a course at the Imperial Defence College, London to further equip him to take over the top appointment. On his return to India in 1954, Subroto took over as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force on 01 April 1954, in the rank of Air Marshal, with the passing of the Change in Designation Act, 1955, the title of “Commander-in-Chief” was dropped, and from 01 April 1955, it came to be known as the “Chief of the Air Staff”.

The First Indian Air Chief

April 1st 1954 was a red-letter day in the history of Indian Air Force. On this day, the only surviving officer of the first batch of six Indian cadets trained at Royal Air Force Flying College, Cranwell, London, commissioned in 1932, Subroto Mukerjee took over the reins of Indian Air Force. It was also on this day that, with the departure of the third British Air Chief, Air Marshal Sir Gerald Gibbs, the last links of the IAF with the British Raj came to an end.

On this memorable day, while getting into the car to take the salute at Air Force Day, which also coincided with his taking over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force, Subroto told his wife, “Believe me Sharda, I don’t deserve all this at forty three, it is all God’s grace". It was the finest prayer anyone could offer his Deity. This unassuming, humble man took over as Commander-in-Chief of the IAF at a turning point in its history.

On assumption of this high office Air Marshal Mukerjee brought with him the intimate understanding of the problems of the Air Force, with the full import of responsibility, having been with it since its inception in 1932. Having held all types of appointments from Pilot Officer to Air Marshal, he was fully equipped with abundant maturity and an incisive insight, of which he made full use in the six years that he was the Air Chief. Years later, Air Chief Marshal PC Lal, DFC, wrote of him in his memoirs. “Imagination, improvisation, quick reaction were characteristic of him. Remarkably even tempered, he showed hardly any signs of stress even under the most trying circumstances, such as the partition riots in Delhi, the Kashmir fighting of 1947-48, the Hyderabad operations or working with a strong personality like Mr Krishna Menon as Defence Minister. Perhaps the only sign of stress was his incessant smoking – and stubbing out the cigarettes after a few puffs. He smiled often and spontaneously.”

Subroto laid great stress on the welfare of the men and their families. His genuine understanding of human nature, his love for his men and his humane approach to their problems endeared him to one and all, whereby he came to be known as the ‘Father Figure’ in the Air Force. His deep concern for the officers and men could not have been portrayed better than in the words of Sharda Mukerjee, which she says “Every time one of his men was killed in a crash, Subroto felt that he lost a part of himself." Subroto Mukerjee had an able partner and the epitome of a perfect helpmate in his wife, Mrs Sharda Mukerjee nee Pandit.

Mrs Mukerjee took a keen interest in welfare activities, and did her best for the families of men and officers. Air Chief Marshal Lal elaborated upon her role and contribution in the following words: “Life in the Defence Services, and I speak specially of life in the Air Force, with which I am familiar, is not quite like civilian life. It is much more of a community life and the principle of synergetics works here. Two plus two is not just four but plus. A sense of belonging to a service, to a community contributes considerably to that intangible but important ‘something’ called morale and espirit de corps.”

Every effort has to be made, and is made, at each station for adequate housing. Education has to be provided to children at any cost. Medical care is most essential. Even entertainment has to be organised. And where there is sorrow, one had to stand beside the stricken, not merely for the moment, but for the future as well. Much of this is done officially. But a substantial contribution comes from the personality, the drive, the sensitivity, compassion and emotional involvement of the CO and his wife in making a station or command or cohesive unit, an extended family. The men who have to take risks when called upon to do so as part of their duty, can be expected to contribute more of themselves, be more purposeful, if they are confident that their families will be looked after.

Humane Approach

In keeping with his humane approach to every problem, he was averse to finding fault just for the sake of it. He did not believe much in overly formal inspections. He preferred to conduct those in an informal manner, with a view to helping the unit, rather than to find faults in the functioning.

In Bombay, once in the absence of the Station Commander, while inspecting a unit, Mukerjee sat in the Adjutant’s chair and went through the day’s mail. On finding a number of reports and returns being asked for by Air Headquarters, he enquired of the Adjutant if all those were relevant. On being told otherwise, he dictated a letter from there itself, asking his Staff at Air Headquarters to review the relevance of such returns and reports. He did not order these to be discontinued unilaterally; he was much too considerate in his dealings with his subordinates. His positive approach helped create an atmosphere of pleasant and relaxed efficiency.

The End of an Era

However, this idyllic phase in IAF history was too good to last long. Air India inaugurated its service to Tokyo by a proving flight in the first week of November 1960. Air Marshal Mukerjee and Air Commodore (later Air Chief Marshal) PC Lal went on this flight while on an official visit to Japan. It was a happy and comfortable journey. On reaching Tokyo on 08 November 1960, Air Marshal Mukerjee stayed in the city, while Air Commodore Lal went on a sightseeing trip to Mt. Fujiyama and Lake Hakone. Late on night, he received a message that struck him like a bolt from the blue “Air Marshal Mukerjee has passed away.” While having a meal with a friend of his, a senior officer in the Indian Navy, in a restaurant in Tokyo, a morsel stuck in the windpipe choking him to death. Before a doctor could be summoned, it was all over.

Thus ended a life full of hope and promise and a twenty eight year long career of dedication, devotion and loyalty to the service and to the country. With his death, the Indian Air Force lost one of its most illustrious officers. His untimely demise was something that the country or the service could ill-afford. The body was flown to Palam Airport on 09 November 1960 and on 10 November 1960 he was cremated with full military honours. His only son, Sanjeev, lit the pyre. A grateful service paid its tribute in the form of a fly-past of forty nine aircraft, one for each of his forty nine years. As each aircraft dipped its wings in a last salute to the ‘Father Figure' of the Air Force there were many moist eyes among the gathered congregation. The honours and mourning were not merely a matter of protocol and form, they were conducted amidst genuine tears and sorrow. Subroto Mukerjee was the foremost pioneer of military aviation in India and because of his friendly, kindly disposition, he was loved and admired by many.

The mentor of the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee has passed into history, but he left behind the indelible imprint in the annals of the service, of a man to be emulated and remembered with respect and reverence.

That car may be sliding, move on a cable, or it may use magnet power, or it may use air power. That imagination may take a shape as a drawing, story, model or even I may finance for such type of project. It is all creativity.

It is not only to create new things, finding new ways, different uses also creativity. Columbus creativity found America. You need not to re-invent the wheel. Just find new ways to use such wheel.
